Insulated Plasterboard Fixings

Insulated plasterboard fixings are designed to provide a stable and secure hold when displaying objects on insulated drywalls. Different from regular plasterboard, insulated boards come equipped with a layer of insulation which creates an overall thicker board. Although thicker, the surface of the insulation board is typically softer which requires a different type of plasterboard fixing.

The majority of insulated plasterboard fixings are designed to reinforce both the insulation layer and the plasterboard layer simultaneously. This is done by typically using longer and more advanced fixings, accommodating for the extra depth which is created by the insulation. The majority of insulated plasterboard fixings feature either a self-drilling mechanism or expanding mechanism, both allowing maximum grip.

An important thing to consider when installing insulated plasterboard fixings is the thermal conductive efficiency. If you're using a standard fixing, heat could potentially escaping through different fixing point which will overall reduce the thermal conductivity of your plasterboard. This is why it's essential to use the correct plasterboard fixings.

Our insulated plasterboard fixings can hold a variety of heavy items such as shelving, floating cabinets or radiators. Picking the right length is crucial and should depend on the type of item your trying to hold.

How to use Plasterboard Fixings

  1. The tools you will need:
  2. Thanks to their design, plasterboard fixings are easy to install and require minimal tools to get the job done. They can be installed with either a screwdriver or drill and suitable drill bit. It's also advised that you use a tape measure and or spirit level to ensure the object your hanging sits correctly.

  3. Mark the Position:
  4. Before you start, mark where you want to place the screw or if you are hanging something like a large picture that can rest on the screws, we recommend placing the fixings at least 10cm apart. You can use the tape measure to get the distance right, and the spirit level to ensure they are both at the same height so that your picture doesn’t look wonky. For brackets that have multiple holes, avoid placing your fixings too close together as it can make the plasterboard crumble and you can lose all support strength. We highly recommend watching our How to use plasterboard fixings tutorial video to get a better understanding.

  5. Start Screwing:
  6. Place the plasterboard fixing itself (not the metal screw that they work in unison with) on the end of your screwdriver or drill and begin turning the fixing clockwise. If you are using a drill, we also recommend that you take a slower approach or speed as the fixings may overtighten and not fasten themselves to the wall. The fixing’s tip will cut through the plasterboard and anchor itself in place, once the fixing’s outer rim is flat against the wall and feels like it cant tighten any more then you are ready to insert the screw provided.

  7. Ready to mount:
  8. Once your plasterboard fixing is secure, you can now screw the screw into the fixing. If you are mounting a bracket then you will need to place the screw through the bracket’s hole or holes for it to fasten against the wall. You can now display your items knowing they are secure!

What type of plasterboard fixings should I use for heavier items?

Depending on the item, we recommend using heavy duty fixings. If you're planning to hang items like large shelves or TV's it's vital to use the correct length, weight and size.

How much weight can a plasterboard fixing hold?

The weight will vary from fixing to fixing. Lightweight plasterboard fixings will typically hold from 5-10kg whilst heavy duty fixings can hold anywhere from 20-40kg. It's important to make sure your fixings support the weight of the item your trying to hold.

How can I remove plasterboard fixings?

Reusing fixings will depend on the type, some fixings such as self-drill anchors can be reused if removed carefully. Whereas the majority of expanding fixings are single use, due to expanding upon use.
