How to use Plasterboard Fixings

Self-drilling metal plasterboard screws, these little gems are a versatile solution for securing items to plasterboard or drywall. These screws come equipped with a drill-like tip, making them perfect for situations where you need to fix brackets, hang pictures, mirrors, or light to medium weight items to plasterboard. As always we recommend watching the videos we provide for a greater level of detail.

Here is a quick guide on how to on how to use them effectively:

  1. Tools for the job: You’ll need the self-drilling screws, a screwdriver or drill with a bit suited for the plasterboard fixings and screws, the item you want to mount and a tape measure or spirit level if you are looking to hang it somewhere specific.
  2. Mark the Position: Before you start, mark where you want to place the screw or if you are hanging something like a large picture that can rest on the screws, we recommend placing the fixings at least 10cm apart. You can use the tape measure to get the distance right, and the spirit level to ensure they are both at the same height so that your picture doesn’t look wonky. For brackets that have multiple holes, avoid placing your fixings too close together as it can make the plasterboard crumble and you can lose all support strength. We highly recommend watching the video provided to get a better understanding.
  3. Start Screwing: Place the plasterboard fixing itself (not the metal screw that they work in unison with) on the end of your screwdriver or drill and begin turning the fixing clockwise. If you are using a drill, we also recommend that you take a slower approach or speed as the fixings may overtighten and not fasten themselves to the wall. We personally like to use screwdrivers here at Skeels Direct for these fixings as it gives us better control. The fixing’s tip will cut through the plasterboard and anchor itself in place, once the fixing’s outer rim is flat against the wall and feels like it cant tighten any more then you are ready to insert the screw provided.
  4. Ready to mount: Once your plasterboard fixing is secure, you can now screw the screw into the fixing. If you are mounting a bracket then you will need to place the screw through the bracket’s hole or holes for it to fasten against the wall. If you are just resting a painting on top by either picture hanging wire or just the lip from the back of the picture frame then you just need to screw the screw to the right depth for your picture to hang off of.
  5. Finishing Up: Once the screws are in place, and that the mounted item is securely fastened or you are happy with where you have placed a picture or mirror, you can use a spirit level to get it to sit to your desired horizontal state (or in other words, get it to sit level).

These plasterboard fixings are particularly effective for lighter to medium-weight objects. They eliminate the need for pre-drilling pilot holes, saving you time and effort. They’re perfect for use in drywall or plasterboard where traditional screws or nails might not hold up as well, especially when dealing with lightweight to medium-weight items.
This process provides a fast and efficient way to mount your items securely without needing advanced tools or techniques.
