How to Hang a Floating Shelf

Floating shelves are a sleek and modern way to add storage or display space in any room. While it might seem challenging to install one on a plasterboard wall without a full toolkit, it’s entirely possible using just three key items: plasterboard fixings, a screwdriver, and a spirit level. This simple guide from Skeels Direct will walk you through the process.

What You’ll Need:
Floating shelf kit (shelf, mounting brackets, screws)

Plasterboard fixings (suitable for the weight of your shelf)

Screwdriver (manual or electric)

Spirit level

Step 1: Decide on Shelf Placement
First, hold your shelf up to the wall where you’d like it to go. Use your eye to estimate the right height and general positioning. Once you’re happy with the placement, grab your spirit level and rest it on top of the shelf.

Adjust the shelf until the bubble is perfectly centred—this means it’s level. While holding it steady, take note of where the bracket holes on the back of the shelf or mounting plate touch the wall. Lightly mark these points with the tip of your screwdriver.

Step 2: Insert Plasterboard Fixings
At each marked point, screw your plasterboard fixings directly into the wall using your screwdriver. Most self-drilling plasterboard fixings are designed to cut into the wall without needing a drill. Apply firm, steady pressure while turning clockwise until the fixing is flush with the wall.

Make sure the fixings are tightly in place, as they’ll be holding the weight of your shelf.

Step 3: Attach the Brackets
Next, align the shelf’s brackets or backplate holes with the fixings you’ve just installed. Use the provided screws and your screwdriver to attach the brackets securely to the wall. As you tighten, check the alignment again using your spirit level to make sure the bracket hasn’t shifted.

If your shelf has multiple brackets, it helps to mount one first, then rest the shelf in place to determine the correct position for the second bracket. Use the spirit level again to ensure even placement before inserting the second set of fixings.

Step 4: Mount the Shelf
Once both brackets are firmly attached and level, slide or attach the floating shelf onto the brackets as instructed in your shelf kit. Give it a gentle push or tighten any small screws that may be required to secure it in place.

Final Check
With the shelf installed, place your spirit level on top one last time to confirm everything is straight. If it’s level and feels secure, your job is done!

Skeels Direct Tip:
Always choose plasterboard fixings rated for the weight you plan to place on the shelf. If you’re unsure, opt for heavy-duty options for extra safety.
